ABSTRACT

Contact tracing has emerged as one tool to communicate infection risks with the public during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study uses source credibility and the risk perception attitude framework to interpret how Americans responded to contact tracing messages from a technology company, employer, physician, or state government. Survey participants (n = 245) were generally positive towards a contact tracing message regardless of source. Participants with high risk perceptions and low efficacy beliefs responded more strongly to appeals from their company and their physician while the low risk-low efficacy group found the state government appeal more compelling. The results suggest that several sources delivering the same health message could engage people with different risk perceptions and efficacy beliefs. ABSTRACT

PM2.5 was continuously collected in Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC), Vietnam, during the period from September 2019 to August 2020, which included the period of socioeconomic suppression caused by restrictions imposed in the face of the coronavirus disease of 2019. The concentrations of PM2.5 mass, water-soluble ions (WSIs), organic carbon (OC), elemental carbon (EC), and water-soluble organic carbon (WSOC) were determined to evaluate the seasonal variations in PM2.5, the effect of socioeconomic suppression on PM2.5, and potential PM2.5 sources in HCMC. The PM2.5 mass concentration during the sampling period was 28.44 +/- 11.55 mu g m(-3) (average +/- standard deviation). OC, EC, and total WSIs accounted for 30.7 +/- 6.6%, 9.7 +/- 2.9%, and 24.9 +/- 6.6% of the PM2.5 mass, respectively. WSOC contributed 46.4 +/- 10.1% to OC mass. NO3-, SO42-, and NH4+ were the dominant species in WSIs (72.7 +/- 17.7% of the total WSIs' mass). The concentrations of PM2.5 mass and total WSIs during the rainy season were lower than those during the dry season, whereas the concentrations of carbonaceous species during the rainy season were higher. The concentrations of PM2.5 mass and chemical species during the socioeconomic suppression period significantly decreased by 45%-61% compared to the values before this period. The OC/EC ratio (3.28 +/- 0.61) and char-EC/soot-EC (4.88 +/- 2.72) suggested that biomass burning, coal combustion, vehicle emissions, cooking activities are major PM2.5 sources in HCMC. Furthermore, the results of a concentration-weighted trajectory analysis suggested that the geological sources of PM2.5 were in the local areas of HCMC and the northeast provinces of Vietnam (where coal-fired power plants are located).

ABSTRACT

With the outbreak of covid-19 in 2020, timely and effective diagnosis and treatment of each covid-19 patient is particularly important. This paper combines the advantages of deep learning in image recognition, takes RESNET as the basic network framework, and carries out the experiment of improving the residual structure on this basis. It is tested on the open source new coronal chest radiograph data set, and the accuracy rate is 82.3%. Through a series of experiments, the training model has the advantages of good generalization, high accuracy and fast convergence. This paper proves the feasibility of the improved residual neural network in the diagnosis of covid-19. © 2023 SPIE.

ABSTRACT

Medical Imaging and Data Resource Center (MIDRC) has been built to support AI-based research in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. One of the main goals of MIDRC is to make data collected in the repository ready for AI analysis. Due to data heterogeneity, there is a need to standardize data and make data-mining easier. Our study aims to stratify imaging data according to underlying anatomy using open-source image processing tools. The experiments were performed using Google Colaboratory on computed tomography (CT) imaging data available from the MIDRC. We adopted the existing open-source tools to process CT series (N=389) to define the image sub-volumes according to body part classification, and additionally identified series slices containing specific anatomic landmarks. Cases with automatically identified chest regions (N=369) were then processed to automatically segment the lungs. In order to assess the accuracy of segmentation, we performed outlier analysis using 3D shape radiomics features extracted from the left and right lungs. Standardized DICOM objects were created to store the resulting segmentations, regions, landmarks and radiomics features. We demonstrated that the MIDRC chest CT collections can be enriched using open-source analysis tools and that data available in MIDRC can be further used to evaluate the robustness of publicly available tools. © 2023 SPIE.

ABSTRACT

There are three main components manufactured from whole blood: red blood cells (RBCs), plasma, and platelets. Plasma contains a multitude of different proteins, peptides, and biologic substances. Approximately 53 million liters of plasma was collected in the United States in 2019. Following collection, plasma is frozen and manufactured into plasma-derived medicinal products (PDMPs). During the manufacture process, several thousand plasma units are pooled for Cohn fractionation, which is based upon cold ethanol precipitation of proteins. The PDMPs are further prepared using ion exchange or affinity chromatography and additional steps to inactivate and remove infectious diseases such as viruses. Almost 20 different therapeutic plasma proteins are purified from plasma via these multi-step manufacturing processes. Interestingly, the demand for pharmaceutical plasma products, particularly intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) products, has been increasing. The manufacture and therapeutic role of blood derivatives particularly immunoglobulin therapy, Rh immunoglobulin (RhIG), COVID-19 convalescent plasma (CCP) and hyperimmune globulins, albumin, clotting factors, fibrin sealants, and platelet rich plasma will be described.Copyright © 2022 AME Publishing Company. ABSTRACT

Introduction: Cancer patients have a high risk of severe COVID-19 and complications from it. Although the COVID-19 pandemic has led to an increase in the conduction of clinical trials (CTs), there is a scarcity of data on CT participation among cancer patients. We aimed to describe the level of participation in a COVID-19 CT, willingness to participate, as well as trust in sources of information for CTs among persons with and without a previous cancer diagnosis in Puerto Rico. Method(s): Data collected from November 2021 to March 2022 from two cross-sectional studies were merged and used for analysis. Informed consent, telephone, face-to-face, and online interviews were conducted among participants >=18 years old living in Puerto Rico (n=987). Descriptive statistics and bivariate analysis (Fisher's exact text and chi-squared test) was done to describe the outcomes of interest, overall and by cancer status. Result(s): Mean age of participants was 41+/-15.5 years. Most participants were women (71.3%), with an educational level greater than high school (89.5%) and with an annual family income below $20,000 (75.1%). Overall, 4.4% of participants (n=43) reported history of cancer diagnosis. Only 1.8% of the population reported to have participated in a COVID-19 CT to receive either a treatment or vaccine;stratifying by cancer, none of the cancer patients had participated in a COVID-19 CT, and only 1.9% of non-cancer patients participated. While 37.0% of the participants indicated being very willing to sign up for a CT assessing COVID-19 treatment, willingness was higher in cancer patients (55.8%) than among participants without cancer (36.1%). Regarding trust in sources of information for CTs, the level of trust ("a great deal/a fair amount") was higher for their physicians (87.6%), researchers (87.0%), the National Institute of Health (86.7%), their local clinics (82.9%), and a university hospital (82.7%), while it was lower for a pharmaceutical company (64.0%), and for friend, relative, or community leader (37.6%);no differences were observed by cancer status. Conclusion(s): While participation in COVID-19 CTs was extremely low in the study population, the willingness to participate was higher among cancer patients. Education on CTs and their availability are necessary to increase participation in this understudied group. Such efforts will enhance the representation of Hispanic and vulnerable populations, such as cancer patients, on COVID-19 CTs, and thus proper generalizability of study findings in the future.

ABSTRACT

Objective To analyze the organizational management of primary health care (APS, by its initials in Spanish) during the COVID-19 pandemic in the Puno regional health system. Methods The methodological design adopted is phenomenology within the framework of the qualitative research paradigm. A theoretical sampling was carried out in addition to the intentional and convenience sampling, identifying actors with decision-making capacity in the health services management process at the different levels of care: director of the Health Regional Directorate (DIRESA, by its initials in Spanish), executive directors of the 11 health networks, two hospital directors, and two heads of health centers. The qualitative data collection has been based on semi-structured interviews, focus groups, and documentary reviews, the results of which were analyzed and inter-preted based on the human talent management approach, the theory of organizational behavior, and the APS paradigm. Results Organizational management of APS in Puno involves addressing six emerging analysis subcategories: unfavorable organizational culture and climate;centralization and prioritization of curative and recuperative medicine;organizational anarchy in the regional health system (poor rectory);institutional and organizational instability;politici-zation of the health system, and deficiencies in the training of health professionals. Conclusions An adequate human talent management of people in health will contribute significantly to the renewed organizational management of the regional and national health system based on a unified and complementary model between APS and curative and recuperative medicine. © 2022, Universidad Nacional de Colombia. ABSTRACT

The pandemic caused by COVID-19 has led to radical lifestyle changes worldwide, particularly in the Republic of Bulgaria, and was a factor for global changes in economics, politics, healthcare and daily life. Aim(s): The aim of the study was to analyze the public attitudes, awareness and fears related to the COVID-19 disease in the Republic of Bulgaria. Material(s) and Method(s): The survey was conducted between August 1st, 2022 and September 1st, 2022 via an anonymous questionnaire consisting of 24 closed questions. A total of 1861 people, aged 18-69 years and older, took part in the survey after being selected randomly. The data were statistically processed via MS Excel. Result(s): The main source of information to the respondents on issues related to COVID-19 was the Internet (29,8%), followed by TV (26%) and the specialized website (Single information portal) - 15,9%. More than one-third (35,1%) of the respondents was afraid of getting infected and an equal share of participants reported that they have been infected with COVID-19. More than half of the respondents (52,5%) adhered to all the provisions of the governmental bodies related to limiting the COVID-19 pandemic. The most frequent symptom of post- COVID-19 syndrome was being easily fatigued (26,7%), followed by shortness of breath (13,4%) and persistent cough (11,6%). Conclusion(s): The survey could be useful in understanding what were the public attitudes, awareness and fears related to the COVID-19 disease in the Republic of Bulgaria during the pandemic.Copyright © 2023 D. ABSTRACT

Background: Many patients affected by COVID-19 suffer from persistent symptoms after infection. Compared to biomedical mechanisms, psychosocial mechanisms have been less investigated. This study examined the association between trust in sources of information on COVID-19 and the burden of incident persistent symptoms. Method(s): A prospective study using data from the SAPRIS and SAPRIS-Serologie surveys nested in the French CONSTANCES cohort. Trust in medical doctors, government, scientists, journalists, and social media was measured between April 2020 and May 2020. The number of incident persistent symptoms lasting for at least two months was recorded. Psychological burden was measured with the somatic symptom disorder B criteria scale. Associations between trust in information sources and outcomes were examined with zero-inflated negative binomial regression and general linear models, adjusting for gender, age, education, income, self-rated health, SARS-CoV-2 serology tests, and self-reported COVID-19 Results: Among 20,985 participants, those with higher trust in government/journalists at baseline had fewer incident persistent symptoms at follow-up (estimate (SE): -0.21 (0.03), p < 0.001). Among 3372 participants (16.07%) who reported at least one symptom, those with higher trust in government/journalists and medical doctors/scientists had lower SSD-12 scores (-0.39 (0.17), p = 0.0219 and - 0.85 (0.24), p < 0.001, respectively), whereas higher trust in social media sources predicted higher SSD-12 scores in those with lower trust in government/journalists (0.90 (0.34), p = 0.008). These associations did not depend upon surrogate markers of past infection with SARS-CoV-2 Conclusion(s): Trust in information sources on COVID-19 should be tested as a target in the prevention of incident persistent symptoms.Copyright © 2023

ABSTRACT

The COVID‐19 pandemic resulted in a widespread lockdown during the spring of 2020. Measurements collected on a light rail system in the Salt Lake Valley (SLV), combined with observations from the Utah Urban Carbon Dioxide Network observed a notable decrease in urban CO2 concentrations during the spring of 2020 relative to previous years. These decreases coincided with a ∼30% reduction in average traffic volume. CO2 measurements across the SLV were used within a Bayesian inverse model to spatially allocate anthropogenic emission reductions for the first COVID‐19 lockdown. The inverse model was first used to constrain anthropogenic emissions for the previous year (2019) to provide the best possible estimate of emissions for 2020, before accounting for emission reductions observed during the COVID‐19 lockdown. The posterior emissions for 2019 were then used as the prior emission estimate for the 2020 COVID‐19 lockdown analysis. Results from the inverse analysis suggest that the SLV observed a 20% decrease in afternoon CO2 emissions from March to April 2020 (−90.5 tC hr−1). The largest reductions in CO2 emissions were centered over the northern part of the valley (downtown Salt Lake City), near major roadways, and potentially at industrial point sources. These results demonstrate that CO2 monitoring networks can track reductions in CO2 emissions even in medium‐sized cities like Salt Lake City.Alternate :Plain Language SummaryHigh‐density measurements of CO2 were combined with a statistical model to estimate emission reductions across Salt Lake City during the COVID‐19 lockdown. Reduced traffic throughout the COVID‐19 lockdown was likely the primary driver behind lower CO2 emissions in Salt Lake City. There was also evidence that industrial‐based emission sources may of had an observable decrease in CO2 emissions during the lockdown. Finally, this analysis suggests that high‐density CO2 monitoring networks could be used to track progress toward decarbonization in the future.

ABSTRACT

Objectives: To describe the use of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) among hospitalized coronavirus disease 2019 (H-COVID-19) patients in a linked closed claims (CC) and open claims (OC) database. Method(s): This analysis identified H-COVID-19 patients between April 2020 (Q2 2020) and June 2022 (Q2 2022) in CHRONOS, a linked CC and OC database. The index event was the date of hospitalization, defined as an inpatient claim within 21 days of a COVID-19 diagnosis in the CC. The occurrence of ECMO 30 days after index was identified using CC data alone and then CC and OP data in combination to assess missing data. Study exclusions included patients under the age of 18, a first COVID-19 diagnosis that did not result in hospitalization, and less than 12-months of continuous enrollment in the CC before index. Study criteria were defined by the presence of an ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, or CPT code on a claim. Results are reported as percentages and 95% confidence intervals. Result(s): Of 321,687 patients with H-COVID-19, the mean age was 50.1 (SD:12.8) with the highest proportion of hospitalizations occurring in Q3 2021 (19.4%). Overall, 0.50% (0.48%-0.52%) of patients in the CC data received ECMO, increasing to 0.61% (0.58%-0.64%) with the inclusion of OC data. The use of ECMO to treat H-COVID-19 patients decreased between Q2 2021 and Q2 2022, with the highest rates occurring in Q2 of 2020 (0.78%) and Q2 2021 (0.80%). The addition of OC data increased rates to 1.12% and 0.89% in Q2 of 2020 and Q2 2021. Conclusion(s): Although use of ECMO decreased in the later months of the pandemic, it represents a substantial burden. The current analysis demonstrates that CC data, often sourced from payers, may underestimate the use of ECMO in real-world settings. Opportunities exist to mitigate issues of missing data by linking CC, OC, and other real-world data sources.Copyright © 2023

ABSTRACT

The COVID-19 pandemic has forced many brands to stop using cosmetic testers to avoid the risk of spreading the infection, jeopardising the future of cosmetic testing. Consequently, consumers must find alternative methods to conduct their information searches and, more importantly, the prospects of shopping online without going to the store to test the product. With the enormous prospects of social media cosmetic electronic word of mouth (eWOM), it is imperative to examine the influence of cosmetic eWOM on social media and for cosmetic marketers to understand the antecedents that result in cosmetic consumers making a purchase. The adapted information adoption model was validated through structural equation modelling based on 341 eligible surveys. The results confirmed that information quality, source credibility, information usefulness, and information adoption are the key antecedents in eWOM on Instagram when investigating purchase intentions in the colour cosmetic industry. This study is one of the pioneers in empirically testing the relationship between information quality and source credibility on information usefulness and, subsequently, the relationship between information usefulness, information adoption, and purchase intentions in a western market based on the cosmetic industry. These new insights provide practical implications for a cosmetic marketer, suggesting the key variables leading to purchase intentions in cosmetic eWOM, which can be utilised in marketing techniques.

ABSTRACT

Purpose: This paper aims to examine the joint role of the pandemic-induced source of crisis (i.e. health and social crisis) based on Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs and message appeal in customer perception of and behavioral intention toward a restaurant. Design/methodology/approach: This study uses a 2 (source of crisis: social, health) x 2 (message appeal: social, health) between-subjects factorial design. A total of 181 samples was collected and data was analyzed by using ANCOVA and PROCESS. Findings: The results showed a significant two-way interaction between source of crisis and message appeal on to-go intention. With the potential effect of risk aversion being controlled, message appeal significantly impacted perceived competence, which influenced both dine-in and to-go intentions. Practical implications: The research findings suggest a crucial role of perceived fit between message appeal and customer concerns during crises. Therefore, restaurant managers should actively communicate their safety practices with their customers to inspire customer confidence. Originality/value: This study identifies crisis dimensions based on human needs during crises such as the COVID-19 pandemic, which determines the persuasiveness of marketing messages. ABSTRACT

The role of contaminated surfaces as a potential source for SARS-CoV-2 transmission has not been clear at the beginning of the pandemic. Numerous laboratory studies show that SARS-CoV-2 can remain infectious at room temperature on different types of surfaces for a few days and substantially longer in the dark. A higher temperature such as 30 °C or 40 °C and a higher relative humidity result in a shorter persistence. On surfaces in the surrounding of confirmed COVID-19 patients the detection rates of SARS-CoV-2 RNA were mostly less than 30% with Ct-values mostly >30 suggesting a low viral load and the absence of infectious SARS-CoV-2. The RNA detection rates on public surfaces were low with 0-22.1%, the corresponding Ct values were mostly >30. Infectious SARS-CoV-2 was only detected in 2 of 11 studies in the immediate surrounding of COVID-19 patients with 0.7% or 10.5% of the samples being positive. A major limitation of the results, however, is that in one study 7 of 8 positive samples were obtained in the surrounding of only one patient with persistent cough and frequent sputum spitting during sampling. Overall, the probability of surfaces to be the source of SARS-CoV-2 transmission is low, especially for public surfaces. © The Editor(s) (if applicable) and The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2022.

ABSTRACT

Air-borne pollutants in particulate matter (PM) form, produced either physically during industrial processes or certain biological routes, have posed a great threat to human health. Particularly during the current COVID-19 pandemic, effective filtration of the virus is an urgent matter worldwide. In this review, we first introduce some fundamentals about PM, including its source and classification, filtration mechanisms, and evaluation parameters. Advanced filtration materials and their functions are then summarized, among which polymers and MOFs are discussed in detail together with their antibacterial performance. The discussion on the application is divided into end-of-pipe treatment and source control. Finally, we conclude this review with our prospective view on future research in this area. ABSTRACT

Telepractice for people with aphasia (PWA) is gaining importance, not least because of the current SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. Many PWA are affected by a reduction of quality of life (QoL). Experts recommend focussing on psychosocial impacts more consistently, but the transfer to telepractice has been investigated in a limited number of studies so far. The aim of this paper is to examine the impact of different telepractice approaches on QoL in PWA. The evidence was identified through a broad literature research in five databases and other sources such as Google Scholar and referring papers or was searched by hand. In total, twelve studies met the eligibility criteria. Focus of the analysis was the association between therapeutic approaches and their effects on QoL. Half (n = 6) of the included studies clearly indicated positive effects of the applied methods on QoL. Further analysis showed no definable link between the therapeutic approaches and their impact on QoL. Nevertheless, decisive assumptions about QoL-enhancing telepractice can be derived from the literature. Telepractice in aphasia therapy can improve the patients' QoL. Benefits for QoL do not only depend on the utilised approach. Several factors (e.g., enhancing of communicative confidence) are significant in their impact on QoL and should be examined in future research.

Introduction: Currently, isolated from SARS-CoV-2 virus exceed 600 million cases in the world. Objective(s): Isolation and characterization of the SARS-CoV-2 virus causing COVID-19 at the beginning of the pandemic in Peru. Method(s): Twenty nasal and pharyngeal swab samples were isolated from SARS-CoV-2 using two cell lines, Vero ATCC CCL-81 and Vero E-6;virus identification was performed by RT-PCR and the onset of cytopathic effect (CPE) was evaluated by indirect immunofluorescence and subsequent identification by genomic sequencing. One of the most widely circulating isolates were selected and named the prototype strain (PE/B.1.1/28549/2020). Then 10 successive passages were performed on Vero ATCC CCL-81 cells to assess mutation dynamics. Result(s): Results detected 11 virus isolates by cytopathic effect, and subsequently confirmed by RT-PCR and indirect immunofluorescence. Of these, six were sequenced and identified as the lineages B.1, B.1.1, B.1.1.1, and B.1.205 according to the Pango lineage nomenclature. The prototype strain corresponded to lineage B.1.1. The analysis of the strains from the successive passages showed mutations mainly at in the spike (S) protein of the virus without variation in the identity of the lineage. Conclusion(s): Four lineages were isolated in the Vero ATCC CCL-81 cell line. Subcultures in the same cell line showed mutations in the spike protein indicating greater adaptability to the host cell and variation in pathogenicity in vitro, a behavior that allows it to have more survival success.Copyright © 2023 Anales de la Facultad de Medicina. Introduction: Oral cancer is Colombia's 8th most common cancer, with an estimated survival rate of 52%. Lack of knowledge and awareness about oral cancer and its risk factors is associated with a delay in diagnosis. Objective(s): To evaluate adults' oral cancer knowledge through a phone survey in the context of the SARS-COV2 pandemic. Material(s) and Method(s): A cross-sectional questionnaire survey was conducted by phone during the COVID-19 pandemic on 268 patients attending at the dental school of Universidad de Antioquia, years 2020-2021. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS software. Result(s): The mean age was 58.9 years. 58.6% of participants had heard about oral cancer. social media was the primary source of information for 42% of participants, and 96.7% considered the screening important. Most patients did not feel worried (54.5%), fearful (59.7%), or anxious (56.3%) in case they were submitted to a screening for early detection of oral cancer. Lower socioeconomic status and educational level are correlated with lower awareness of oral cancer. The dimensions of experience and attitude towards screening were not associated with sociodemographic variables. Conclusion(s): The knowledge of oral cancer is still poor and is related to low socioeconomic and educational levels. However, this association was not observed in the attitude and experience dimensions toward screening for oral cancer. Therefore, there seems to be a need for more educational programs about knowledge of oral cancer, especially in socially disadvantaged groups, considering that there are no barriers related to screening.

ABSTRACT

Transgender and gender diverse (TGD) individuals experience high levels of minority stress, as well as a high prevalence of suicidality and self-harm. The current study investigates if emotion regulation mediates the relationships of minority stressors with self-harm and suicidality. TGD adult primary care patients (N = 115) completed a survey including measures of minority stressors, emotion dysregulation, self-harm, and suicidality. Emotion regulation mediated the relationship between victimisation and suicidality. Emotion regulation did not mediate the relationship between victimisation and self-harm. TGD individuals' suicide risk may be increased when they experience victimisation through increased emotion dysregulation.

ABSTRACT

This article describes some of the actions taken by the Colombian health system in order to improve the response capacity to the COVID-19 (SARS-CoV-2) pandemic and correct some of the structural failures of the system that threatened the effectiveness of the response. The evolution of some epidemiological markers of the impact of the pandemic is also presented, between March 2020 and September 2021, which can help to unders-tand whether the measures taken could mitigate the impact of the pandemic or not. Among the actions that could most influence the epidemiological outcomes (cases and deaths) of the pandemic, we can highlight the increase in the number of Intensive Care Unit beds (from 5 000 to 11 000 approximately) and the steps taken to acquire vaccines in a highly competitive international market which preferred to provide vaccines first to industrialized countries than to less developed ones. Despite these efforts, the draconian isolation measures, and the suspension of many economic activities, during the study period, Colombia was one of the 15 countries with the highest mortality in the world and more than 60% of the population became infected after the first wave of the pandemic. This suggests a low effectiveness of the efforts made to strengthen the health system. © 2022, Universidad Nacional de Colombia. All rights reserved.
